The classic south-coast route is Lima → Paracas → Ica / Huacachina. It fits as a Lima extension (1–2 nights) or a full day; it also works as a gateway south (long bus to Arequipa on the Panamericana). Altitude: sea level — a good “breather” after Cusco or Puno.

How to get there from Lima
One of the few stretches where a car makes sense (Lima–Paracas–Ica by day on the Panamericana), if you are comfortable with Peruvian roads. Excellent alternatives — and the most cited for the typical traveler:

Do not use Uber/Cabify as if it were a “taxi to Huacachina” instead of the bus: the PeruCheap guide’s app logic is urban (Lima/Cusco). For the south coast, bus/van/tour.
From Ica to Arequipa: long coast/interior bus — plan an overnight trip or a stopover.
